History of Superkids Ministries
S
uperkids began as a weekend retreat for children in April of 1983 at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church in Sugar Grove, Ohio. Twenty-eight children and eight adult and teen staff attended the Friday night to Sunday morning event. Events during the day were held at the church and sleeping was provided at the Lancaster Methodist Campground.
The camp moved to Camp Wyandot in Hocking County the following spring and for the next three years the numbers of campers and staff grew. When Camp Wyandot was no longer able to meet the needs of the growing camp, a new location was chosen. For seven years (1987-1993), the camp was held at Camp Scioto near Junction City, Ohio. During that time, Superkids began hosting two weekends to accommodate the continued growth of the camp. The event also moved from being a spring event to a summer event. During the camp’s time at Camp Scioto, Superkids also became an independent ministry and began receiving financial donations to cover the cost.
In August 1994, the camp moved to Stoutsville Camp in Stoutsville, Ohio. The facilities allowed for adequate space for worship services, dining and sleeping. Campers were housed in small cabins and dormitories on the campground.
Outgrowing the facilities at Stoutsville required the camp to move again and in 1999, Superkids was held at Berne Union School in Sugar Grove. The space at the school allowed all campers and staff to be housed in one large building and the newly built “community room-gymnasium” provided plenty of space for worship services and other camp activities. The first set at Berne Union was a castle that when brought to the school had to be trimmed to keep from touching the ceiling.
When Berne Union was no longer available because of school activities, Superkids moved to New Hope Church in Pickerington. Technology that was available at New Hope brought Superkids a step up by allowing video presentations and better audio. For five years, camp remained at New Hope.
In July 2006, Superkids moved to its current location at Fairfield Christian Church in Lancaster, Ohio. The church/school allows for adequate space for worship services, meals and sleeping. While at Fairfield, over 500 children have attended each summer.
The camp has grown incredibly from its humble beginnings in 1983. Thousands of children have attended Superkids and hundreds of adults and teens have volunteered their time at camp. God has been faithful to provide staff, protection and finances in the over 25 years of Superkids. In all the years of Superkids the mission has remained the same; to bring children into a loving relationship with Jesus Christ and to encourage them in their faith.
